Hosting A Stately Luncheon in 90 Minutes

We were tasked with conceptualizing, designing and producing the 2015 KRA Taxpayers luncheon. The indoor ceremony would be a congregation of Kenya’s top corporate and government leaders including President Uhuru Kenyatta. MoSound Events’ job, beyond providing a complete technical solutions package, was to come up with a plan that would see a successful presidential awarding, entertainment, live feed and an impressive luncheon, all in a span of 90 minutes. The event, held at the Kenyatta International Convention Centre’s Tsavo ballroom was to be aired live on national television.

The challenge was to bring life to the event, using available resources considering almost half of our equipment and technical team were in Rwanda for Transform Africa, a global event we were working on at the time.

Taking the opportunity to employ a higher level of creativity and innovation, the stage creatives team decided to try out something new; fusing fabric and screens for the stage design.
“ For the first time ever, we used the mixed elements design for such an event,” says Luide Kakembo, one of the stage creatives. The massive stage size- about 40 meters in length was another daring move as the event was indoors.

With just hours to set up, the technical team got into action, using trussing, fencing and barriers for the stage set up. Over 120 P3 and P10 Daylight Screens and high quality studio fabric were used, going with a theater set up style.

Bringing excitement and a touch of fun to the formal function relied on the creative use of diverse lighting to complement the fabric and screens. The lighting systems made use of over 70 LED parcans, lekkos, dimmers and sharpys, all strategically mounted at various strategic points in the ballroom, all planned out with the careful thought to complement both the production team’s video shoot as well as the media’s recording being broadcasted live.

The KRA branding on the podium was prominently created by the use of white branded draping mounted on a circular truss at the stage’s center and smaller graphics of the brand running across strips of black fabric. For quality sound output, a mix of quality mics, sound processors and speakers were used.

Being in charge of entertainment, MoSound Events sought out a powerful story telling dance from Sarakasi dancers, a rib cracking session by Kenya’s comedy king -Churchill and top band- Elani, much to the delight of the crowd. The entertainment session took the center stage again after the formal part of the event was over and the guests were treated to a relaxing live band performance as they enjoyed their 5 star course meal.
